TRIGGER WARNINGS - Log 10, 1/24/19

TRIGGER WARNINGS - Log 10, 1/24/19 (trigger warning: mentions of self h*rm, r*ape.)   Oh my god, no! I'm a small liberal angel snowflake who can't handle talking about cutting myself or rape! Geez I need to grow up! People like me just need to handle themselves and shut up! It doesn't matter if I have increased anxiety and depression or that I may have flashbacks and an anxiety attacks. Nope. Just let me shrivel up here and learn how to deal with my trauma quicker than we could have this debate!   Okay, okay. Not to be sarcastic or anything, but really? People have been through so much. We don't need to pay per letter we write or type. It's simple! Two letters and whatever your mentioning. And if you're already mentioning it once, you can say it again. Sure, you have the freedom of speech to say and not say something. But why suck in people to read something and have them crying, having an attack, or feeling unsafe.  (It get's much into suic*de/ s*elf har...

Why am I on Your Instagram's Private Story? - Log 9, 1/20/19

Why am I on Your Instagram's Private Story? - Log 9, 1/20/19 Oh, media. I mean the title says it all. Not to call anybody out or anything, but why do people randomly film others? Why did someone have to tell me this? I was just fixing my hair, yet you're filming me and trying to make fun of me? Let's see. I mean firstly, I'm not trying to call anybody out. I mean, that's rude. But, let's talk about meme culture. Yes. Memes. Ok, so I get it. Me fixing my hair in English for a couple minutes is so funny right? Fine whatever. You can laugh in your head or point me out to your friend, I can't stop you from thinking. But when you put me on social media to be laughed at or ridiculed, that's just cold. But that is exactly what meme culture is. Making fun of something. I mean, sure, it's okay is your friend tells you that you can. Or you film them and you keep it private. And sure, maybe it' not eve made to be fun of. But guess, what? Shouldn't c...

MISSREPRENSTATION - Log 8, 1/19/19

MISSREPRENSTATION - Log 8, 1/19/19   MissRepresentation is a documentary on the objectification and sexualization of women and girls and how it was harmful to young girls. It covers in marketing and popular media as well as politics and news media. To me, the video was powerful and truthful. I was surprised especially by some of the topics they brought up, especially because of the time it was released, such as people of color flattening their hair to "fit in" and the gender wage gap. Firstly, my tab button and punctuation keys aren't working and they are being all janky so this will be interesting Secondly, I love the "pun" off of the name. Because they are focusing on woman they made it "Misrepresentation" instead of "Misrepresentation". And it's a "miss" of representation. Like it doesn't represent women correctly..... I just wanted to say that. Back to our regularly scheduled program. Thirdly really surprised when th...

2018 Rewind - Log 7, 1/9/2018

2018 Rewind - Log 7, 1/9/2018   It's officially 2019!! It's out with the old and in with the new. But let's take a second to reflect.   In online media, things have been wild. All the way from the Tide Pod challenge and Logan Paul's Suicide Forest Scandal to the Royal Wedding and the twelve Thailand boys to the Dr. Ford's testimony and the net neutrality debate. This world is crazy and the world's been through a lot.   And honestly, I'm lost in words. I have so much to say but so little to put down. So whatever I write, it will be a mess. Brace yourself.   It's so weird. Media is so weird. We're told to be open minded yet we're given what we want to see. They literally tailor words and give us certain ads so that we click and share. But at the same time, I'm so grateful for it. It's so amazing that I can look what I want with a click of the "Explore" button.   And sometimes being able to talk to someone is a blessing and a ...

ALL THE KIDS ARE DEPRESSED - Log 6, 12/18/2018

ALL THE KIDS ARE DEPRESSED - Log 6, 12/18/2018   Jeremy Zucker is one of my favorite musical artists. Earlier this year he released the song "All the Kids are Depressed". When hearing the name, it definitely sounds like a very sad song. Well, I mean, it definitely is. However, a oddly upbeat beat plays in the back as he sings the lyrics about the phenomenon seemingly common in today's young generation. Zucker uses his platform to speak out about the mental illness and the life living with it.   Talking about mental health has definitely become a more normalized topic. People have learned it's okay to not be okay or that getting help doesn't show weakness. This is definitely attributed to the media on the internet. A movement of people advocating for mental health awareness can expand faster because of it's easier access to those who think alike, and who care about the same issues.   These lyrics definitely indicate a realistic depiction of depression. As so...

Madison and Vine - Log 5, 12/10/18

Madison and Vine - Log 5, 12/10/18   In Persuaders , we learn about the product placement in the media people want to consume. This technique of advertisement used by the persuaders is called Madison and Vine. Companies who want to convince the public to buy their product may pay TV shows or movie creators or YouTubers to strategically place certain items to secretly advertise.    My first connection to this technique is the movie The Truman Show . The main character, Truman, was born into a fake world created by movie producers. The entire movie is based around how he was born into this artificial space and ultimately figures out his truth. When Truman starts to realize something is off about his world, he starts to run into problems such as other people telling him he's just going crazy. This stops him from figuring out the truth. As he tries to talk to his wife about his new revelation, she calls him crazy and tells him about the new product she bought at the stor...

IT WASN'T ME - Log 4, 12/5/18

IT WASN'T ME - Log 4, 12/5/18   I'm going to be completely honest. I didn't realize I grew up with tech. Especially when I grew up, I didn't know DVD players weren't something we had for hundreds of years. I didn't know TV's used to have very few channels. I didn't realize iPods were something newly created. I've always had my mom's blackberry at restaurants to play games on. And I mean, most little kids don't have a very good perception of time. So when I learned I was apart of the very first generation to experience this, I was shocked. I thought the older generations were just trying to point a finger as to why the world is doomed. It's not our fault that we were born now. I certainly didn't create the iPhone or Microsoft or the computer. Yes, I'm the generation that has to teach my parents how to use an iPhone or turn on a computer. But I'm not the one who made this vision and created a reality. It wasn't me.   Look,...
