TRIGGER WARNINGS - Log 10, 1/24/19 (trigger warning: mentions of self h*rm, r*ape.)
Oh my god, no! I'm a small liberal angel snowflake who can't handle talking about cutting myself or rape! Geez I need to grow up! People like me just need to handle themselves and shut up! It doesn't matter if I have increased anxiety and depression or that I may have flashbacks and an anxiety attacks. Nope. Just let me shrivel up here and learn how to deal with my trauma quicker than we could have this debate!
Okay, okay. Not to be sarcastic or anything, but really? People have been through so much. We don't need to pay per letter we write or type. It's simple! Two letters and whatever your mentioning. And if you're already mentioning it once, you can say it again. Sure, you have the freedom of speech to say and not say something. But why suck in people to read something and have them crying, having an attack, or feeling unsafe.
(It get's much into suic*de/ s*elf harm, r*ape) For example, I was scrolling through Instagram one day and a post popped up. It was a twitter thread of people saying weird things their family does/ funny events that have happened. The list goes on and most of them are funny. Until I read, "One time my daily chore was to help fix the wall from the night before when my dad tried to shoot himself." After reading that, I just sensed my entire body shaking. With a history of depression and not-so-good thoughts, this really hit me. Like really hit me. It made me sad, angry, frustrated. And most importantly, I wish I didn't read it. And another time, right after I had been raped, I read a story or something on a news site about another person being raped. I remember crying and staying in bed for the rest of the day. I didn't eat for the rest of the day. I felt unsafe. I felt disturbed, violated. If only I had something...... Oh shoot, that's what I'm talking about. Trigger warnings.
These trigger warnings have been a large debate. Universities have been deciding as to whether kids should have safe spaces or these warnings. The comedy community is wondering if jokes should have them before jokes. Activist posts advocating for oppressed people who have gone through traumatic things sometimes don't have trigger warnings. I mean sure, sometimes you could tell by the title or the context. Those are easy to spot. Maybe if you're sensitive to rape and something has "rape" in the title, you're okay. But sometimes it's just not that easy! And it's weird people don't realize that.
I mean, the media is a huge apart of our lives. Nearly every single person who did the first media blog said they are on media too much. And even without social media, there's the news, TV, radio, advertising, books, movies, random posters in the bathroom. So why endanger people, make them feel disturbed or anxious, and let them feel unsafe.
This truly isn't a "snowflake liberal" problem. It's a "human kindness" problem. Whenever there is time, be kind. And guess what? There's always time to be kind. If you mistakenly hurt someone, apologize and learn. If you get offended, then let them apologize and move on. But let's be careful and respect others.
