2018 Rewind - Log 7, 1/9/2018
It's officially 2019!! It's out with the old and in with the new. But let's take a second to reflect.
In online media, things have been wild. All the way from the Tide Pod challenge and Logan Paul's Suicide Forest Scandal to the Royal Wedding and the twelve Thailand boys to the Dr. Ford's testimony and the net neutrality debate. This world is crazy and the world's been through a lot.
And honestly, I'm lost in words. I have so much to say but so little to put down. So whatever I write, it will be a mess. Brace yourself.
It's so weird. Media is so weird. We're told to be open minded yet we're given what we want to see. They literally tailor words and give us certain ads so that we click and share. But at the same time, I'm so grateful for it. It's so amazing that I can look what I want with a click of the "Explore" button.
And sometimes being able to talk to someone is a blessing and a curse. I hate not knowing if a friend who is having a rough time isn't texting back or online because I'm not sure they're okay. It's become a control issue I guess. Maybe if I didn't have that ability I'd be okay. But at the same time it's so great. I can ask for help with homework and sometimes it's easier to admit you're not okay through a screen.
But okay. This is about trends (I think). So me and trends. We've had an okay-time I guess. I've heard "tea" and "sis" more than I've heard them in the past 15 years of my life. I think I'm okay with it. I mean, people just want to have their fun. But I feel like trends come with such a mob mentality. The "I have to do this to be popular or get likes" mentality. Like if all the cool kids are posting "11:11" on their story then I should too. Or everyone has this probably overpriced backpack so I need one too.
And there's this whole thing with thrifting. It's recently become a trend. but for years, people would be shamed or made fun of because they had thrifted clothes. I tried to find this video on YouTube where the person was talking about how it's "unfair" so to say. Like, the poor people were made fun of for something they needed to do to live but now it's some kind of popular trend? Look, if you like it, thrift. It's cheaper. It's a great feeling to find something cool. But donate clothes too and don't make fun of those who need to do things to have simple necessities.
And sure, thrifting isn't the worst trend. And I mean look at the Tide Pod challenge. That was a mess. Kids were literally eating Tide Pods, a laundry detergent, for popularity..... I mean yeah it was a joke at first but when susceptible kids are looking as to how they can be a famous meme or something, they'll do it. And people have. Shock value is so weird. Like why do you need random people on the internet's opinion? You're life and yourself and worthy without it. I promise.
I don't know how to end this. It was kind of a rant to be honest. But these are just the few things I wanted to get off my chest I guess. This is super weird. I'll go. Peace out.
Tide Pods :pppp :https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2018/01/13/teens-are-daring-each-other-to-eat-tide-pods-we-dont-need-to-tell-you-thats-a-bad-idea/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.d27b5aa2e54b
